Summer-perfect Workout

Being active is important to overall health, and during the summertime, it becomes easier to engage in fun activities that give your body a great workout.

1)     Go outside!

Take advantage of the nicer weather in the early morning and/or late evening.  Go for a run with a family member or friend.  Make a challenge out of a trip to the park.  Put together a whole bunch of exercises and time yourself as you do them.  Go biking or rollerblading.

2)     Swim!

Going to the beach this weekend? Attending a barbeque that involves a pool? Take your swimwear with you and make the water fun your workout for the day.  Swim laps, perform aerobics in the water for an interesting muscle challenge, play a pool game.  Just move!

3)     Take in the nature around you

Go biking on a trail in one of Florida’s beautiful forest preserves.  Alternatively, hike along the trail with one or a few people who would enjoy the activity and provide great company. Work your legs harder by pushing yourself to go faster, even running up steep parts of the trail. And take it the breathtaking greenery while you’re at it.

4)     Look for options

Instead of heading to the gym or giving up on fun activity, look for outdoor fitness classes in your area.  Some personal trainers like to offer outdoor classes that are both challenging and exciting.  Getting a workout in while outdoors has been shown to improve your mood.  If you’re doing it with a trainer and a small group, it may be the best experience of your week!

Eating Tips

While on vacation, or even when attending summer social events, some tips may help you make wiser choices when it comes to your food.

1)     Reach for fruits to satisfy your hunger and sweet cravings throughout the day.  Summer fruits are delicious and provide your body with much-needed nutrition.

2)     At a barbeque, avoid high-fat meats like T-bone steaks and ribs.  Look for skinless chicken breast and lean meat when choosing your protein.

3)     Eat salad! Just try to avoid mayo-based ones. If you’re making your own, try using Greek yogurt or low-fat sour cream (or a mix) instead of mayonnaise.

4)     Look out for those salad toppers! Cheese, croutons, fried chicken, and some dressings pile the calories onto your otherwise healthy salad.  Try using low-fat dressings, cut back on the cheese, and switch fried chicken with grilled.  Try topping your salad with a handful of healthy nuts for added fullness and good fats.
