About This Treatment

How laser hair removal works

Laser hair removal uses concentrated light energy that is absorbed by the melanin in the hair shaft, heating and permanently disabling the follicle while leaving the surrounding skin unaffected.

At Florida Aesthetics and Wellness, our laser technology is calibrated for each patient's specific skin tone and hair color, making it safe and effective for all Fitzpatrick skin types, including darker complexions. Our equipment cools and soothes as it glides along your skin, making the procedure far more comfortable than waxing. Most patients describe the sensation as a brief, mild snap with each pulse.

Because hair grows in three distinct cycles, active growth, regression, and resting, laser only disables follicles in the active growth phase. This is why a series of 6 to 10 sessions is needed to achieve permanent reduction across an entire treatment area. After your series is complete, the vast majority of treated hair will not return. Occasional annual touch-up sessions address any hormonal regrowth.

What to Expect

What happens during a laser hair removal appointment?

1
Consultation & skin assessment (15 min)
Your provider reviews your skin tone, hair color, and treatment goals. Fitzpatrick type is assessed and laser settings are selected. You'll receive a personalized session estimate and prep instructions.
2
Pre-treatment preparation
Shave the treatment area 24 hours before your appointment, never wax or pluck, as the laser targets the hair root beneath the skin. Avoid sun exposure and tanning for 2 weeks prior. Arrive with clean, product-free skin.
3
The treatment
Protective eyewear is applied and the laser handpiece is moved systematically across the treatment area. You'll feel a brief warmth or mild snap with each pulse. Our cooling system minimizes discomfort throughout. Most areas take 15 to 45 minutes.
4
Post-care & results
Mild redness or warmth for 1 to 2 hours is normal. Apply SPF and avoid sun exposure for 2 weeks. Treated hairs shed naturally over 1 to 2 weeks, this is the treatment working. Each session builds on the last, with dramatic results by sessions 4 to 6.

Common Questions

Laser hair removal, frequently asked questions

Most patients require a series of 6 to 8 sessions to achieve optimal results. This is because laser hair removal is only effective on hair in the active growth phase (anagen). Since your hair follicles are never all in the same phase at once, multiple treatments spaced 4 to 10 weeks apart are necessary to catch every hair in its growth cycle. After your initial series, most patients enjoy an 80% to 90% reduction in hair.
Yes. At Florida Aesthetics and Wellness, we utilize advanced laser technology that is safe and effective for all skin tones, from Fitzpatrick I through VI. Unlike older lasers that could only treat dark hair on light skin, our systems allow us to safely treat patients with deeper skin tones by specifically targeting the hair follicle without affecting the surrounding pigment.
Most patients describe the sensation as a quick "rubber band snap" against the skin. Modern lasers often include integrated cooling tips that chill the skin on contact, significantly increasing comfort. For more sensitive areas, the sensation is very brief, and most sessions are completed in just 15 to 30 minutes.
There is virtually no downtime. You may experience slight redness or a sensation similar to a mild sunburn for a few hours after your session, but you can return to your normal activities immediately. We recommend avoiding hot tubs, saunas, and intense exercise for 24 hours to allow the follicles to cool.

Preparation is simple but important:

  • Shave the area: Closely shave the treatment area 12 to 24 hours before your appointment.
  • Avoid the sun: Stay out of direct sunlight and avoid tanning beds or self-tanners for at least 2 weeks prior.
  • No plucking or waxing: Do not pluck, wax, or use electrolysis for at least 4 weeks before your visit, as the laser needs the hair root to be present in the follicle to work.
No. In fact, the opposite is true. Laser hair removal damages the follicle, which causes the hair to grow back much finer, lighter, and softer than before. If you experience any regrowth years later (often due to hormonal shifts), the hair is typically sparse and much less noticeable than your original growth.
Many "budget" clinics use Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), which is not a true laser. IPL uses a broad spectrum of light that is less concentrated and often requires significantly more sessions to see results. At Florida Aesthetics and Wellness, we use medical-grade lasers that provide a concentrated beam of light for more precise, faster, and more permanent results.
We strongly recommend waiting until your tan has faded. Even a "natural" tan increases the melanin in your skin, which can cause the laser to be attracted to your skin surface rather than the hair follicle. For your safety and the best results, we prefer to treat your natural skin tone.
We can treat almost any area of the body where unwanted hair grows. The most popular areas for our Brandon patients include the underarms, legs, bikini area (including Brazilian), back, chest, and face.
