Sculptra® Aesthetic (poly-L-lactic acid) doesn't add volume directly, it stimulates your body to produce its own collagen, creating gradual, natural-looking improvements that build over weeks and last over two years.

What happens during a Sculptra® Aesthetic appointment?

Consultation & assessment (15 min)
Your provider evaluates facial volume loss patterns, discusses your goals, and determines the number of vials and sessions appropriate for your anatomy. Sculptra® Aesthetic is a gradual process, we'll set realistic expectations for when you'll see results and how they'll progress.

Reconstitution & prep (10 min)
Sculptra® Aesthetic powder is reconstituted with sterile water and lidocaine at least 72 hours before your appointment (this is standard protocol, improper reconstitution is the most common cause of nodule formation). Topical numbing cream is applied.

Treatment (20–30 min)
Using a grid-injection technique with a fine cannula, your provider deposits Sculptra® Aesthetic in the deep dermis and subcutaneous tissue. The number of injection points and depth are carefully controlled to ensure even distribution and minimize the risk of nodules.

Post-care massage protocol (5 min)
The 5-5-5 rule: massage the treated area for 5 minutes, 5 times per day, for 5 days. This distributes the product and prevents clumping. You'll receive a written aftercare card. Your next session is typically scheduled 4–6 weeks later.

Sculptra® Aesthetic results are gradual by design. Most patients begin noticing subtle changes at 6–8 weeks as collagen builds. Full results are typically visible at 3–4 months after the final session. This gradual timeline is considered an advantage by many patients, the change is so natural that others simply assume you look well-rested rather than "treated."
A general guideline is one vial per decade of age per session, so a 50-year-old might start with 2–3 vials per session across 2–3 sessions. However, this varies significantly based on the degree of volume loss and the areas being treated. Your provider will assess this at consultation and give you a specific plan.
Sculptra® Aesthetic has been FDA-approved since 2004 with a strong safety record. Common side effects include temporary swelling, redness, tenderness, and bruising at injection sites. The most discussed risk is nodule formation, small lumps under the skin, which is largely preventable through proper reconstitution protocol and the 5-5-5 massage rule. Our providers follow strict technique standards to minimize this risk.
Unlike hyaluronic acid fillers, Sculptra® Aesthetic cannot be dissolved. It's a commitment to the collagen-stimulation process. This is why thorough consultation and realistic expectation-setting are essential before starting. The gradual onset also means there is time to assess your response before your next session.
Sculptra® Aesthetic is ideal for patients in their 40s–60s experiencing gradual facial volume loss who want natural-looking, long-lasting results without the immediate "filled" appearance. It's not recommended for patients seeking immediate dramatic changes, pregnant or breastfeeding patients, or those with a history of keloid scarring.
Regular hyaluronic acid fillers (like Juvéderm) immediately replace lost volume, you see results the same day. Sculptra® Aesthetic triggers your body to rebuild its own collagen over 3–4 months. The trade-off: Sculptra® Aesthetic takes longer to see results but lasts significantly longer (2+ years vs 6–18 months) and looks exceptionally natural. Many patients use both, HA fillers for immediate results and Sculptra® Aesthetic as a long-term investment.
