What is KYBELLA® and how does it eliminate a double chin?

KYBELLA® (deoxycholic acid) is an FDA-approved injectable that permanently destroys fat cells beneath the chin. Once destroyed, those cells cannot accumulate or store fat again.

Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring bile acid your body uses to digest dietary fat. When injected into submental fat (the fat pad under the chin), it disrupts fat cell membranes, causing permanent cell destruction. Your body then clears the cellular debris over the following weeks.

Because destroyed fat cells cannot return, KYBELLA® results are permanent once your goal profile is achieved, as long as you maintain a stable weight. Most patients require 2–4 sessions spaced 6 weeks apart for optimal results.

What to Expect

What happens during a KYBELLA® appointment?

Marking & numbing (15 min)
Your provider marks the treatment grid on the submental area and applies a topical numbing agent. Ice packs are also used to reduce discomfort. The injection site is thoroughly cleansed.

Injections (15–20 min)
KYBELLA® is injected in a grid pattern across the submental fat. Each session may involve 20–50 injections depending on the area size. Most patients describe a burning or stinging sensation that peaks during injection and fades within minutes.

Post-treatment monitoring (10 min)
You'll sit for a brief observation period. Ice is applied to reduce immediate swelling. You'll receive detailed aftercare instructions: expect significant swelling for 5–7 days (this is normal and expected, it is evidence the treatment is working), possible bruising, and temporary numbness.

Follow-up & next session (6 weeks)
Your 4-week follow-up assesses your response to treatment. If additional reduction is desired and you're a good candidate, your next session is scheduled at 6 weeks. Most patients achieve their goal in 2–4 sessions. Final results are fully visible 8–12 weeks after the last session.

KYBELLA®, Frequently Asked Questions

Swelling is the most significant side effect and is expected, it's actually evidence the treatment is working. Initial swelling peaks at 24–48 hours and substantially resolves by 7–10 days. Some residual firmness or mild swelling can persist for up to 4 weeks. We recommend scheduling KYBELLA® sessions well before any important events.
Yes. Once fat cells are destroyed, they cannot regenerate. The cells are permanently eliminated. However, if you gain significant weight after treatment, remaining fat cells in the area can still enlarge. KYBELLA® results are best maintained with a stable weight.
Most patients need 2–4 sessions. The exact number depends on the volume of submental fat and your desired degree of reduction. Sessions are spaced 6 weeks apart to allow full healing and assessment between treatments. Your provider will evaluate after each session and advise whether additional treatment will provide further improvement.
The injections cause a burning/stinging sensation that is most intense during the treatment and fades within 5–10 minutes. Ice and numbing are used before treatment. The swelling and tenderness in the days after treatment are the most uncomfortable part for most patients, plan for reduced social activity for the first week.
KYBELLA® was FDA-approved in 2015 after extensive clinical trials. Serious side effects are rare when performed by a trained provider who knows the anatomy. The most important risk is marginal mandibular nerve injury, a rare but serious complication that can cause temporary or (very rarely) permanent asymmetric smile. This underscores the importance of using a highly trained injector. All KYBELLA® treatments at Florida Aesthetics and Wellness are performed under physician supervision.
Expect significant swelling and some bruising for 5–10 days. The area will feel tender and firm. Most patients take 1–2 days off from social activities. After the first week, you'll look mostly normal, though mild swelling continues. You'll start to see fat reduction emerging at 4–6 weeks post-treatment.
