What is electrolysis and how does it work?

Electrolysis is the only hair removal method with FDA approval for permanent removal. A fine, sterile probe is inserted into the natural opening of each hair follicle, and a precisely calibrated electrical current permanently destroys the follicle's ability to produce hair.

Unlike laser hair removal, which targets melanin in the hair shaft, electrolysis works electrically, which means it is effective on every hair color, including fine blonde, red, gray, and white hair that contains too little melanin for laser to target. It is also safe for all skin tones, including darker Fitzpatrick types V and VI.

What happens during an electrolysis appointment?

Your electrologist reviews your hair color, skin tone, treatment area, and timeline goals. A personalized session plan is created with realistic expectations for the number and frequency of sessions needed.

Probe insertion
A fine, sterile probe is gently inserted into the natural opening of each hair follicle. Modern probes are extremely fine, the process is far more comfortable than older electrolysis methods. Most patients describe a brief warmth or tingling with each follicle.

Electrical pulse & hair removal
A precisely calibrated electrical current is delivered to permanently destroy the follicle's growth cells. The treated hair is then removed with tweezers. Because the follicle is disabled, the hair slides out cleanly with no resistance.

Post-care
Mild redness or sensitivity may occur for a few hours. Your electrologist provides specific aftercare instructions. No downtime. You can return to normal activities immediately. SPF is recommended for treated areas.

While laser hair removal is highly effective for reducing hair growth over large areas, electrolysis is the only method recognized by the FDA as permanent hair removal. Electrolysis is also "colorblind," meaning it works on blonde, red, gray, and white hairs that lasers cannot see. It is the gold standard for precision areas like the eyebrows or for clearing those few stubborn hairs that may remain after a series of laser treatments.
Because hair grows in different cycles and each follicle must be treated individually, a series of treatments is necessary. Most patients require consistent sessions over a period of 12 to 18 months to achieve complete, permanent clearance of an area. The frequency of your appointments will decrease over time as fewer active hairs emerge.
Most patients describe the sensation as a quick, localized heat or a minor stinging feeling. Because we treat each follicle one by one, the discomfort is very brief. We can adjust the settings to ensure your comfort, and many patients find that applying a topical numbing cream 45 minutes before their appointment significantly reduces any sensitivity.
Yes. Unlike older laser technologies that required a contrast between dark hair and light skin, electrolysis does not rely on pigment. It is 100% safe and effective for all skin tones, from Fitzpatrick I through VI, without the risk of pigment changes or burns.
Once a hair follicle has been successfully destroyed by electrolysis, it can never grow hair again. However, you may see "new" hair in the treatment area during your first few months. This is typically not regrowth, but rather hair from neighboring follicles that were dormant during your previous session. Once every follicle in an area has been treated, the results are permanent.
Electrolysis is safe for almost any part of the body. The most common treatment areas include the chin, upper lip, eyebrows, bikini line, and underarms. It is also a popular choice for removing unwanted hair on the breasts or abdomen. The only areas we generally avoid are the inside of the nose and the inside of the ear canal.
Yes, there are three main methods. Galvanic uses a chemical reaction to destroy the hair root. Thermolysis uses localized heat to dehydrate and destroy the follicle. The Blend Method combines both heat and chemical action for maximum effectiveness. During your consultation at our Brandon clinic, we will determine which method is best suited for your hair type and skin sensitivity.
Downtime is very minimal. You may experience slight redness or minor swelling in the treated area for a few hours, similar to a localized mosquito bite. We recommend avoiding heavy makeup, excessive sweating, and direct sun exposure for 24 hours following your treatment to allow the skin to settle.
For the most effective treatment, please do not pluck, wax, or thread the area for at least 2 to 4 weeks prior to your visit. We need a tiny bit of hair growth (about 1/8th of an inch) to be visible so the provider can accurately locate the follicle and remove the hair after treatment.
Yes, and it is becoming increasingly popular with male patients. Electrolysis is particularly valuable for men in two situations. First, men whose hair has turned gray or light with age and who find that laser no longer works on their neck, chest, or beard area. Second, men who have completed a laser hair removal series on the back or chest but have a number of remaining lighter hairs that laser could not target.
