Standard non-ablative lasers (like MOXI) work below the skin surface with minimal downtime but require many sessions. What happens during a HALO Laser appointment?

Pre-treatment prep & numbing (45 min)
Prescription-strength topical numbing cream is applied to the full treatment area 45–60 minutes before your session. This is essential for comfort during HALO. For deeper treatments, we also offer ProNox (nitrous oxide) for additional relaxation. Your skin will be thoroughly cleansed before treatment begins.

HALO treatment (30–60 min)
The HALO handpiece is moved across your face in a systematic pattern. You'll feel warmth and mild prickling, most patients describe it as comfortable with the numbing. The device's HALOS technology tracks coverage to ensure even delivery. Your provider adjusts settings in real time based on your skin's response.

Immediately post (15 min)
Immediately after treatment your skin will appear red and feel warm, similar to a moderate sunburn. A soothing serum and cooling fan are applied. You'll leave with a post-care kit and detailed written instructions.

Healing: MENDS + peel (days 2–7)
Days 2–4: The "MENDS" (microscopic epidermal necrotic debris) appear as a bronze/bronzed-toast texture on your skin. Do not pick or exfoliate, these are the treated columns sloughing naturally. Days 4–7: Skin peels gently and reveals smooth, refreshed skin underneath. Results continue improving over 4–8 weeks as collagen remodels.

Days 1–2: Red and warm (sunburn feel). Day 2–4: Skin develops a bronze, "toast" texture called MENDS. Day 4–7: MENDS naturally shed and skin peels gently. By day 7–10 most patients are comfortable returning to social activities with mineral sunscreen and light makeup. Full glow and improvements continue for 4–8 weeks. Plan for 5–7 days of reduced social activity.
One well-performed HALO treatment produces significant, lasting improvement. Many patients are satisfied with one treatment per year. For more significant sun damage or scarring, 2 sessions spaced 3–6 months apart produces superior results. Your provider will set realistic expectations for how many sessions your specific skin condition warrants.
HALO can be performed on Fitzpatrick skin types I–VI with proper protocol adjustments. Darker skin types require lower energy settings and a longer pre-treatment brightening protocol to minimize the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). This is critical, we perform a detailed Fitzpatrick assessment at consultation and will not proceed if we believe the risk outweighs the benefit for your skin type.
MOXI is a gentler, all-non-ablative treatment with 2–4 days of downtime, ideal for maintenance, younger skin, and first-time laser patients. HALO is more comprehensive, its hybrid technology achieves more dramatic resurfacing results but requires 5–7 days of downtime. Many patients use MOXI for annual maintenance and schedule a HALO every 2–3 years for a deeper reset.
Most providers recommend waiting until the MENDS have fully shed (days 5–7) before applying makeup. Mineral makeup (ZO Skin Health, SkinMedica) can typically be applied around day 7 once there's no open skin. Regular foundation should wait until day 10. Your post-care kit includes detailed day-by-day guidance.
Stop retinoids (Tretinoin, retinol) 5–7 days before treatment. Avoid sun exposure and self-tanner for 2 weeks. Start a medical-grade SPF regimen if you haven't already. If you have a history of cold sores, inform your provider, antiviral prophylaxis is prescribed before laser treatment. Arrive with clean skin and no makeup.
