How to plump up your cheeks

How to plump up your cheeks

Are you as curious about the injectable cheek filler “Voluma XC” as I was? I’ve seen friends and co-workers of mine who have had the treatment done and their before and afters were fantastic! With all the new videos of how to do your makeup, beautiful cheeks are everywhere. I did my own research, went in for a consultation, thought about it for a little while, and then decided I have nothing to lose and felt it would be a win win for me.  I got it done about a month ago so now I can tell you how my experience getting Voluma XC went.

Voluma XC is made by Allergan, the maker of Botox and Juvederm. Like Juvederm, Voluma is mainly comprised of Hyaluronic Acid but it’s thicker than Juvederm so it stays in place better, is injected deeper, and lasts longer. I’ve gotten both Botox and Juvederm in the past and for me, the injectables are the way to go to combat the visible signs of aging. It’s FDA approved and it’s supposed to last for up to 2 years!

The reason I knew it was for me was because I’ve always hoped for a way to plump up the cheeks because of how mine work. When I smile, my cheeks aren’t round and smooth, but have a flatness that’s almost an indent. I don’t like to wear my hair up, and I see myself in pictures and I appear to have this long, narrow face with no shape to it. I envy at girls with beautiful high cheekbones, that glow when they wear blush and highlighter. I wanted those pronounced high cheekbones and round apples. Looking in the mirror I would push them high and imagine what they would look like. I attempt to use makeup and give myself the illusion of having pronounced cheeks, but sometimes I end up just looking like a girl with too much makeup on.I considered the other options out there on the market and dove into my research. After much spent time, lots of before and after pictures, and a pros and cons list, I decided I really wanted this for myself.

After my full consultation with Nelia, I was confident and so was she that I would enjoy the results. She decided we would start with one syringe, putting half in each side, then if we decided that another syringe would benefit me, we would be able to split another into both, equalling 2 total.  I was expecting it to hurt more than getting Botox and Juvederm, but it actually hurt much less, and can easily be tolerated without much ice or numbing needed. I loved the way it was looking with the single syringe, but we opted for the second because my cheeks were really flat and needed the help.

Results are visible immediately, and I LOVED the results! I like to stay pretty private about what I change, so I decided I wasn’t going to tell my fiance or anyone else. I went home that day, and I felt he would kind of take second looks at me, but couldn’t put his finger on what was different. We went to dinner with two of our very close friends that night, and my girlfriend complimented how great my makeup looked, but that was it. I am most positive that no one seemed to notice anything was injected into my face. I had no bruising, no swelling, and this beautiful new shape to my face that I was obsessed with! Even putting makeup on became more fun.  A week or so later, we were helping my grandparents pack to move closer to us, and coming across pictures of my late mother, my fiance made the comment “Oh look at this! You definitely have her high cheekbones.” I blushed and my confidence went through the roof. I was very pleased to say the least. I’m someone who has over the years been quite skeptical, maybe even a little judgemental of those girls that go get a face full of botox and fillers, but now I have a different kind of respect for it.

When you talk to the injector, you see the passion, its like its their art and your face is their canvas. Any fears I had, she helped me overcome. Her honesty and personal desire for natural looking results made me forget I was even nervous in the first place. She showed me her work she had done in the past on previous patients who were so elated with results they allowed her to use them.

Now you might be thinking, what if I didn’t like them? Well, I had the same question as you. As I explained my fear of the possibility of hating my new cheeks or being too “fake” looking, it was explained to me that in the event that does happen, the filler can be dissolved. That changed everything. At that point I was ready to get something I really had wanted for a long time. I was so glad that I went through with it and I have ZERO regrets. The cost was so reasonable for something that lasts you 2 years and the process was smooth and effortless.

Overall, my experience with Voluma was what I wanted, and exceeded my expectations. I am 1 month post and am still enjoying the results and look of my new high cheekbones. I think this may be one treatment I may continue getting over the years. If you are thinking about it, go see Nelia and get your free consult! You have nothing to lose and some pretty cheeks to gain!

How to Use Botox and Fillers for the Best Results

How to Use Botox and Fillers for the Best Results

Anti-aging injectables like Botox, Xeomin, Juvederm, and Radiesse have transformed the world of cosmetic treatments by giving men and women simple, painless, and effective ways to target wrinkles, lost cheek volume, and other common signs of aging in the face. Since the body’s natural collagen decreases by about 1% every year after the age of 30, these anti-aging injectables make it possible to restore and maintain a naturally youthful appearance.

However, optimal results are only possible when an injectable is used properly. If you are considering using Botox, Juvederm, or another injectable for the first time, be sure to follow these tips for best results. (more…)

Spring into action. Fight wrinkles with Botox!

Spring into action. Fight wrinkles with Botox!

Whether you hear the word Botox and wince, or you have been getting it for years and consider yourself a Botox pro, its important to be informed about the truth behind Botox. The stigma that has surrounded Botox for years comes from many things including celebrity accounts, social media, or just pure lack of education about what it really is. Its often confused with a poorly done face lift, or other surgical procedures done to the face that we often look at and think, “Oh, that is Botox gone wrong.” The truth is that Botox isn’t surgical, and in fact, it has been used on men and women for medical treatments for over 28 years and cosmetically now for 15 years.
 So what is Botox exactly?
Well to be clear, it is in fact, a toxin. Doesn’t sound so reassuring, but it is actually a purified protein called botulinum toxin. Botox temporarily relaxes muscle areas by blocking nerve impulses that trigger contractions, which has the effect of softening wrinkles and changing the expression. It is used in low doses through injections to cause local targeted muscle paralysis to reduce wrinkles temporarily. The treatment lasts for 3 to 4 months. Both men and women tend to start with Botox treatments in their 20’s, however, there is no such thing as too early for an adult. The earlier you start, the less chance you have of facial expressions making irreversible etches in your skin, and the longer you can maintain a youthful and vibrant look.
The Results:

The results are not immediate, they appear gradually to a maximum result after 3 weeks. After about 2 weeks, squinting will become less frequent, consequently, as you squint less, the creases fade. With full treatment, the eyebrows can slightly lift, making the eyes appear more open and the brow more arched. Crows feet soften and slowly disappear, yet everything seems very natural. In fact, most patients claim unless they reveal their secret, people around them don’t seem to notice . The results are not final because the injected muscles recover. It is recommended to return approximately every 3-6 months depending on the reappearance of wrinkles.

What are my risks?

Let’s say you try Botox and then decide to stop, what will happen? Several rumors suggest that once you have used Botox, you will have to do injections for the rest of your life and that if you stop, your face will look wrinkled and your features will sag worse than they had before. Well I have good news! This is not true at all. If you stop, your face comes back as before, and facial muscles regain their normal strength. However, the fact of not doing some movements with your face for a certain period of time will result in less pronounced wrinkles over time, than would have been under normal circumstances. You’ve probably seen stars who don’t look so natural and you say: “You can see that she has had Botox done.” In fact, it is probably more than Botox in these cases, such as several cosmetic surgeries, but what is important for Botox, is dosage. Patients usually want a natural result. The reality is that it is not your forehead creases that show your emotions or expressions, it is your voice, your eyes, your smile etc. In addition, Botox applies only to the upper part of the face. Botox side effects are very rare and always reversible, and nothing is final if you don’t like the result.

Overall, Botox can have some very amazing results for someone who is looking for youthful and more radiant looking skin. In the end, it helps prevent future wrinkles, smooths the appearance of current wrinkles, and has the ability to lift the brow and open the eyes. The ideal result can be communicated to your injector and combined with his or her recommendation. It is important for you to create a trusting relationship with the injector, and to have a full consultation to ensure you understand the treatment and how it may work for you, and to see if other treatments can be combined or offered as an alternative.

Summer Break does NOT mean a break from Nu Derm!

Summer Break does NOT mean a break from Nu Derm!

Can I use the Obagi Nu Derm System (with Tretinoin and Hydroquinone) during the summer?

Absolutely!? In fact,?it is?especially important to use your Nu Derm products during the summer?when sun exposure is at its highest and skins susceptibility to sun damage is at its peak.? If there was ever a time to correct and protect your skin with Nu Derm,?SUMMER?is that time!

One of the misconceptions regarding tretinoin is that it thins the skin and makes skin more susceptible to sunburn.? Experts would disagree!? Although this can appear true during your skins initial adjustment period (as skin can experience redness, sensitivity and irritation), with continued use of tretinoin, the epidermis is actually thickened and strengthened. While your skin is adjusting to your retinoic acid/tretinoin as ALWAYS -?it is important to use a SPF like one of your favorites from Obagis Sun Shield line that includes Sun Shield MATTE or Sun Shield TINT, available in Warm or Cool tint.? With proper protection, you can experience the benefits of great skin care, all year long.

What do the experts say?

Suzan Obagi, MD, Associate Professor of Dermatology and Associate Professor of Plastic Surgery, Director, UPMC Cosmetic Surgery and Skin Health Center University of Pittsburgh Medical Center hears this question a lot:

Many patients ask if they should take a break from using their skincare products during the summer months.? This stems from concerns with sun exposure and increased outdoor activities.? However, I have oftentimes found that patients that need the NuDerm product line most are those with pigmentation issues such as melasma or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.? These are conditions that typically flare and worsen during hot, sunny weather.? In order for patients to have adequate control over these conditions, I recommend that they continue to use their NuDerm products as instructed.? This goes hand in hand with sun avoidance during the peak hours of?10 am to 2 pm, wearing a hat when outdoors, and reapplying their sunscreen after sweating, swimming, or every 2 hours while outdoors.? Furthermore, while ultraviolet ray B (UVB, the burning ray) increases during the summer, UVA (the aging ray) remains constant all year.? Therefore it is imperative to use a daily, broad-spectrum sunscreen such as Obagi Sun Shield, either tinted or untinted, daily.? I recommend it even while driving or working under fluorescent lights, as these are sources of ultraviolet light exposure that most patients do not realize.

Doris Day, MD,?is also renowned for her expertise and is a leading expert on dermatology and aesthetic dermatology.?Dr. Day is affiliated with Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City and is a clinical associate professor of dermatology at the New York University Langone Medical Center where she was presented with the award for Dedication and Excellence in the Teaching of Dermatology. According to Dr. Day with regard to retinoid usage and sensitivity:? “This is one of the biggest retinoid myths,” says Doris Day, MD, (a tretinoin user herself). “The ingredient itself is sensitive to sunlight, which is why you should apply it before bed at night. A retinoid shouldn’t make your skin any more vulnerable to UV rays than it would be after buffing away dead skin with a face scrub. Summer is actually a good time to start a retinoid: Humidity makes your skin less likely to dry out as it adjusts. Of course, apply sunscreen (SPF 30, at least) as diligently as you always do.”

Is there anything extra I can do to protect my skin during the summer months when sun exposure is at its peak?

In addition to using a sunscreen, incorporate a topical antioxidant into your morning skin care routine.?Antioxidants help in the fight against free radical and sun damage.? They help stabilize collagen, which helps reduce the aging effects the sun inflicts on our skin. Vitamin C in the form of L-ascorbic acid is believed by many experts to be the most stable and effective in protecting skin.? Obagi Medical offers a full portfolio of vitamin C (l-ascorbic acid) products:? Pro C formulas 10%, 15% and 20% as well as Pro C Peptide Serum, C Exfoliating Day Lotion and Pro C Suncare SPF 30, all of which contain vitamin C.? Apply a few drops, first thing in the morning, after cleansing and toning.?(Be careful to avoid the eye area if youre using Elastiderm Eye Cream as Elastiderm contains a copper peptide, which neutralizes the benefits of the copper and C when the two ingredients come into contact.)

To illustrate how vitamin C can protect against oxidization, notice the difference in the untreated side compared to the treated side of the apple in the photo above. This shows how vitamin C can prevent oxidation and therefore slow down the visible appearance of aging.

Stopping your Nu Derm products in the summer increases the chance of receiving additional, untreated photo damage – the very thing you are trying avoid!

During the summer months, it is important that you continue to use your Nu Derm System to keep pigmentation in check (as well as improving texture, tone, and laxity issues.) Confidently enjoy Nu Derm and wonderful skin all year long!
